A Practical Unboxing Checklist: Don't Void Your Warranty
Unboxing is the most exciting part of buying a doll, yet it's also the moment you can accidentally void your assurance without becoming aware it. Between a silky purchase and a stressful dispute, the difference can be a few minutes of care during delivery and inspection, and the checklist below is the exact process seasoned purchasers follow every time. It's not involved, but it's effortless to skip in the excitement, and skipping it is how buyers end up with a damaged doll and no recourse.

The Step Most People Skip
The box needs inspecting before you sign the delivery receipt. The single most significant step is also the one most people skip, because they're enthusiastic and in a hurry. A crushed, torn, dented or wet box needs photographing from multiple angles before you open it. They'll deny any claim you make later if you sign for a damaged box without documenting it, since the shipping company's liability ends when you sign for the delivery. Taking a few photos in thirty seconds can save you hundreds of pounds.

When the Courier Won't Wait
The signature marks the point of no return. Once you sign, you're accepting the delivery as received in decent condition, and any damage that wasn't documented at the time becomes your complication rather than the shipping company's. You have the right to refuse delivery or to sign as "damaged" if the box looks damaged, and that keeps your right to claim. When a courier won't let you inspect the box before signing, the note "unchecked" or "signed without inspection" is the only protection you've got.

Don't Tear Into the Cardboard
Open it carefully, once the box is inside and any apparent damage is documented. Tearing into the cardboard is a risk, as a negligent opening can scratch or cut the doll inside; use a knife or scissors along the tape instead. The doll should come out slowly, with checking as you go, and the packaging should stay until you've completed the inspection, since you may need it to return the doll if something is mistaken.

Tears Left Alone Get Worse
Start by checking for tears in the armpits, groin and neck. Most typical during shipping is damage in these regions, where the material is thinnest. To check the armpits, lift the arms gently; to check the groin, move the legs apart slowly; to check the neck, turn the head gently. If you spot any tears, take photographs immediately, and get in touch with the seller before you do anything else. Repairing small tears is possible, but ignoring or worsening a tear can turn it into a much larger complication.

Wire-Frame Hands Are Vulnerable
The second check is the fingers. Make sure every finger is intact, that the joints are moving smoothly, and that there are no visible breaks or tears in the material. Particularly with wire-frame hands, a finger that's been damaged in transit is a typical issue, and it's much easier to resolve if it's reported straight away. Bend each joint gently, one finger at a time, to confirm it moves freely.

Moving On When the Bolts Are Fine
Third, check the standing feet bolts, if your doll has them. Check that both bolts are present, secure and not loose, and that they're not protruding through the sole of the foot. Manufacturing fault or safety issue? A missing bolt is the former and a loose bolt the latter, and both are worth reporting. The next check awaits if the bolts are present and secure.

Does the Head Match the Photos?
Your fourth check should be the head sculpt. Lay the photos of the head you ordered beside the head that arrived, and make sure they match. A legitimate complaint is a mismatched head, and head swaps are more common than you'd think, nonetheless apparent it sounds. Check the face shape, eye colour, makeup and overall expression; if something doesn't match, photograph it and contact the seller.

Smooth Motion Is the Standard
The fifth item on the list is the joints. Move every joint through its full range of motion, checking for smooth movement without grinding, squeaking, or resistance. Don't worry about a stiff joint, which is ordinary, but a joint that's grinding or feels like it's catching is a fault. Report any difficulty you find, documented, before you use the doll; utilising a doll with a defective joint can make the problem worse and may void your assurance.

No Easy Fix After Use
The body proportions are the sixth thing to check. Compare the doll's measurements with the advertised ones, and make sure the waist, hips, bust and height match what you ordered. The mistaken size is a legitimate complaint, manufacturing slip-ups being a fact of life. This is especially crucial for purchasers who ordered a custom size, because there's no easy way to fix a size mistake once the doll has been used.

Uneven Areas, Discolouration and Seams
Seventh, check the skin texture and finish. The skin should look consistent across the whole body, so look for uneven areas, discolouration, or evident seams. While some minor variation is ordinary, expect substantial patches of discolouration or evident seams to count as a fault. When something looks incorrect, photograph it, and contact the retailer if you're troubled.

A Mismatch Is a Legitimate Complaint
Add an eighth check that's worth doing: a wig and eye inspection. Make sure the wig is the colour and style you ordered, and that the eyes are the correct colour and properly set. A mismatch is a legitimate complaint, because these smaller details are part of what you paid for. Photograph the wig and eyes plainly, and compare them to the order confirmation before you contact the seller.

Check Nine: The Overall Feel
The ninth item on the list is the overall feel of the doll. Run your hands over the body and feel for any lumps, hard spots, or inconsistencies in the material. Hard patches or an uneven feel is a flaw, whereas some texture is ordinary. This check is especially critical for silicone dolls, expected to feel smooth and consistent, and for TPE dolls, expected to feel pliable and supple without any hard spots.

Don't Discover It Weeks Later
Did everything you paid for turn up? Accessories and any extra items that came with the order are check ten. Tick off the spare wig, the storage bag and the cleaning kit if you ordered them, making sure everything is present and in solid condition. Rather than discovering them weeks later, report missing accessories straight away, as they're usual and much easier to resolve that way.

Different Packaging Gets Refused
One more check, the eleventh, is often overlooked: the packaging itself. Because most returns and warranty claims need it, keep the original box and any internal packaging for at least thirty days. The vendor often refuses a doll returned in different packaging, and one shipped back in original packaging is much more likely to arrive in good condition. Clearly label the box with the date of arrival, and store it somewhere dry, since you may need it.

If You Find Any Issues: Document Everything
Where there are issues, document everything before you contact the seller. Photograph the damage and keep the packaging, then write down exactly what you found and when you found it. Immediately contact the seller, describing the issue obviously and including the photographs. Most sellers resolve issues rapidly when you report them early and provide evidence, and those that don't are sellers you want to steer clear of in the future anyway.

The Don't List
Don't assume the doll is fine inside if you sign for a crushed box, because it typically isn't. Don't bin the packaging until the inspection is complete; you'll need it if you have to return the doll. Using a damaged doll can void the assurance, so don't use the doll before you've completed the inspection. Proving the damage was there from the start gets harder the longer you wait, so don't wait to report an issue.

Card Providers Side With Evidence
There's also the matter of a vendor refusing to honour an assurance claim that you believe is legitimate. Worth escalating carefully, that scenario makes the documentation you collected during the unboxing your strongest asset. Contact the seller in writing, not by phone, to have a record of what was said and when, and include all the photographs and a clear description of the flaw. With a credit card purchase and a vendor who still refuses, contact your card provider and request a chargeback. Most card providers side with the purchaser given clear evidence of a fault and a refusal to resolve it, but the evidence has to be documented and timely.

What the Warranty Actually Covers
Also worth asking is what the warranty actually covers, since not all assurances are the same. Covered by most warranties are manufacturing defects such as tears at the seams, joint failures, and material flaws; not covered is damage caused by misuse, accidents, or typical wear and tear. The difference between a fault and damage matters, because a claim that's obviously a fault gets honoured, and a claim that's clearly user slip-up gets rejected. Read the warranty carefully before you acquire; a costly doll doesn't mean everything is covered.

Take It Seriously, Do It Properly
The single best protection for your purchase is the unboxing checklist, which takes about thirty minutes, and that's the bottom line. Delivery is the only moment when the retailer and the shipping company are both still liable, and the checklist records the doll's condition then. Do it properly and take it seriously, and you steer clear of the most typical cause of purchaser disputes. More info at this rosslink.
