Understanding Sex Doll Skeleton Joint Types And How They Work
Virtually everything about how she functions is decided by the skeleton, which is the framework inside the doll. It determines what poses are possible, how well she keeps them, how long she lasts, and how hard she is to move. When something goes wrong, most buyers eventually think about the skeleton, but they should've done it sooner, as it's the single most key piece of hardware in the doll. Make the incorrect choice and it may cost hundreds in repairs or force an early replacement of the whole doll.

Standard vs Yoga: The Two Main Skeleton Types
The difference between the two primary types of skeleton matters massively. The standard skeleton is basic; it's found in most budget dolls and uses bolt joints connected by a wireframe. Light builds and basic posing are well within its limits, and a standard skeleton is ordinarily sufficient for a petite or skinny doll under 35kg. Put 40kg on it, though, particularly with extra chest weight, and the joints loosen fast, and a loosened joint doesn't tighten back up.

When the Upgrade Stops Being Optional
Advanced or yoga skeletons are the upgrade, using stainless steel locking joints to handle far more weight. Because the joints click into place and stay there, you can pose her sitting up, leaning forward or standing with her weight shifted, and she won't sag for hours. It exists to support heavier dolls, so BBW, large boobs, big booty and hefty curvy models aren't offered it as an alternative; it's mandatory. For anything over 35kg the yoga skeleton is needed, full stop.

Ratchet Joints Explained
As much as skeleton type, joint type matters, and a lot of purchasers get caught out by it. Two kinds of joint appear in the yoga skeleton. Teeth engage as you move a ratchet joint, also called a clicking lock, and hold it firmly in place. Known as tightened screws as well, friction joints use resistance to hold a position and slowly loosen over time. Reliable position-holding and far longer life make ratchet joints superior in virtually every way.

Cheap Joints, Expensive Problems
They appear in budget dolls because friction joints are cheaper and simpler to manufacture, but they're a false economy. Sagging starts when the friction has worn down with use and the joint has lost its grip. Expect noticeably looser friction joints within a year or two of regular use, with no simple way to restore them. Ratchet joints can last years without noticeable degradation, whereas the cost difference between the two is relatively small.

Where the Strain Lands on a Heavy Doll
Take the hip, knee and shoulder joints, which bear the most strain; ask about these before you order. During posing on a heavier doll these joints carry most of the weight, so a loose hip joint means she can't stand and a loose shoulder joint means her arms can't be posed. You should look elsewhere if the maker can't tell you what type of joints the doll has in these precise positions, because that's a red flag.

Ask the Seller About Reinforced Hips, Knees and Shoulders
You also need to think about joint reinforcement, which has nothing to do with joint type. A reinforced joint has additional material around the pivot point, which prevents the metal from deforming under load. For heavier dolls, reinforcement is every bit as significant as joint type, since a ratchet joint without reinforcement can still fail under extreme weight. Put the question to the seller outright, are the hips, knees and shoulders reinforced, and don't be fobbed off with a vague answer.

Twisting and Bending: What the Spine Allows
Add the spine to the parts of the skeleton that deserve attention. You'll find dolls with a fully articulated spine that allows for twisting and bending, and others with a more rigid spine that only allows basic movement. An articulated spine permits much more natural postures and is a significant upgrade for photography and posing. Basic use is fine with a rigid spine, but it limits expressiveness; the articulated choice is worth the additional cost for routine photography.

The Final Piece of the Puzzle: The Neck
The neck joint gets the least attention, yet it's the final piece of the puzzle. With a thoroughly articulated neck the head can tilt, turn and nod, adding hugely to the doll's expressiveness. A rigid neck keeps the head in one position, so the doll looks stiff in photos and has a narrower range of natural expressions. You'll notice the difference in use even if it's subtle in specs, so ask about it before ordering.

How the Skeleton Is Anchored Inside the Body
There's a detail nobody tends to think about: the way the skeleton is anchored inside the body. On cheaper dolls the internal mounting points that hold the skeleton in place can come loose or shift over time, meaning the skeleton moves around inside the material. Where dolls are better constructed, the mounting points are reinforced and the skeleton stays firmly anchored. Because stress is concentrated at the shoulders and hips, that's where this counts most, and a loose mounting point is the beginning of the end for the doll's functionality.

What Can and Can't Be Upgraded After Purchase
The most crucial thing to understand is that the skeleton is not just a support structure. The one component that can't be easily upgraded after purchase is also the foundation of everything the doll can do. Everything from the wig to the eyes to the hands to the storage setup can be changed; the skeleton, though, would mean taking the doll apart and fundamentally rebuilding her, so most owners never do. With every pose you'll benefit from the skeleton, so acquire the best you can afford; it's the one upgrade that invariably pays off.

A Few Hundred Pounds That Decide Everything
With heavier dolls the yoga skeleton is mandatory, and to skip it is a false economy. No other part of the purchase repays you like the additional few hundred pounds for the yoga skeleton, which determines whether the doll functions for years or fails within months. The standard skeleton usually suffices for lighter dolls; if posing frequently or photographing the doll is the plan, give the yoga skeleton some idea. Over 35kg, or for weighty use, the yoga skeleton is the right choice for any doll.

Joint Type After the Skeleton Itself
The joint type comes second in importance to the skeleton itself. The cost difference is small, yet ratchet joints hold positions better and last far longer than friction joints. Ask the vendor which type the doll has every time, and if they answer "standard", don't accept that, because standard can mean either one. Not being able to tell you is a warning sign for a retailer, so buy from someone who can.

Reinforcement Is Essential Above 35kg
It's reinforcement, the third question, that most customers forget to ask about. Reinforced joints hold their position better under hefty loads, and they're stronger and longer-lasting. If a doll is over 35kg, or has a big bust, reinforced joints are vital. If the seller can't confirm reinforcement, assume it's not there and plan accordingly.

Basic Use vs Regular Posing
The fourth and fifth considerations, the spine and neck, matter more for photography than for basic use. The additional cost of an articulated spine and neck is worth it if you plan to photograph your doll frequently or want a natural look in varied poses. For basic use without much posing, rigid versions are fine and the money can go on something else.

Natural and Poseable for Years: The Skeleton Payoff
The skeleton is the part of the doll that most buyers ignore until something goes incorrect, but it's the part that determines everything about how the doll functions. The doll will feel natural and poseable for years if you get it right. Should you get it mistaken, expect joints that work loose, limbs that sag, and finally a doll that cannot hold any position. Forget one question and a solid purchase can turn into a bad one; the skeleton is the question to ask first.

Break In the Joints Before You Try Ambitious Poses
A final sensible point: break the joints in properly when the doll arrives, before any ambitious posing. Damage is what forcing them causes; the joints are tight from the factory and need to be worked in gently. Warmth is the trick: a hairdryer on a mild setting softens the TPE around each joint, after which you can cycle each one through its full range of motion several times. Because it loosens the joints evenly rather than stressing individual points, this hour is the single best investment you can make in the doll's long-term durability.

Wrapping Up: The Skeleton Decides
Hidden inside the body, the skeleton is responsible for the doll's movement, her ability to hold a pose, and her stability. Three things to do: purchase the best skeleton you can afford, ask about the joint type and reinforcement before ordering, and break it in properly when it turns up. The skeleton is forever, whereas everything else about the doll is negotiable. More info at this rosslink.
