How To Avoid Dye Migration With The Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test
Ignored more than any other tip, this is still the single most vital thing a new doll owner can be told. Once dark fabric has transferred colour onto the doll's skin, which is what dye migration is, there's no going back. Scrub as hard as you like, with whatever cleaning item or technique you fancy, and a stain that's been absorbed into TPE will still be there. Prevention is the only defence, and it starts with a simple test that takes two minutes and costs nothing.

Every Skin Tone Is at Risk
Behind it all sits some simple chemistry. Fabric dye ends up in the TPE like water soaking into a sponge, and the reason is TPE being an oil-based material with generally oil-soluble dark dyes. Leave a doll in a dark dress for a few hours in a warm room and that's enough to cause a permanent stain, as the process starts straight away on contact. This is particularly noticeable on pale dolls, where dark marks are impossible to miss, but it occurs on every skin tone to some degree.

How to Run the Wet-Cloth Test
As for the test itself, it's uncomplicated. Start with a hidden spot, an inside seam ideally, and take a small piece of the fabric from it, then wet it thoroughly with clean water. Something white is the target, a cloth, cotton bud or kitchen paper, and you rub the wet fabric against it firmly for about thirty seconds. Don't put the fabric on her if any colour transfers to the white cloth, because it will stain your doll. If nothing shows up on the white cloth, the fabric is safe and you can use it without worry.

The Logic Behind the Wet Test
Water stands in for the moisture that's naturally present on the doll's skin, which activates the dye transfer, and that's why the test uses it. If dry fabric on dry skin transfers less dye than wet fabric on damp skin, then testing with water gives you the worst case, and that's precisely what you want. Pass the water test and the fabric is safe for usual use. Failing means staining, and you can't get around it.

The Hard Way Means Replacement Dolls
You should repeat the test with every new piece of clothing, including ones from a brand you've used before. A fabric that was safe last year might not be safe this year, thanks to changing manufacturing processes and varying dye batches. What the test takes is two minutes; what it gives you is a doll that looks good for years instead of permanent dark marks on her thighs. No excuse exists for skipping it; customers who learn this the hard way end up purchasing replacement dolls.

Dark Colours, Cheap Dyes and Waxy Coatings
The types of fabric that are most likely to fail the test are dark colours, cheap dyes, and anything that feels a little waxy or coated. If you want to know the worst offenders, it's black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple, because of their concentrated, oil-soluble dyes. The sizable amounts of pigment in bright neon colours make them risky too. The difference isn't guaranteed, but costly clothing is regularly safer than cheap, as fabric dyed cheaply is more likely to bleed than fabric dyed properly.

White, Cream, Beige and Pale Pastels
As for the safest types of fabric, think light colours, natural fibres, and anything that's been pre-washed. White, cream, beige, pale pastels: almost always safe, as there isn't enough pigment to cause evident staining. Natural fibres like cotton and linen grip dye more firmly than synthetics tend to, so they're less likely to bleed. Pre-washed, the fabric has already shed most of its excess dye, and that makes transfer onto the doll less likely. Doubtful about a piece? Pre-wash it before putting it on the doll.

Before You Give Up on a Fabric
You can attempt a few things with a fabric that fails the test before giving up on it. Try several hot washes with a small quantity of white vinegar; the notion is to help set the dye and minimise bleeding. Try leaving the fabric in a saltwater solution overnight: salt acts as a mordant, which binds the dye to the fibres. Even so, no method here invariably works, and some fabrics will bleed whatever you do, yet it's worth attempting if you really want to use a specific piece of clothing.

Neither Is Foolproof
Safest by far is to not use a fabric that still fails after washing. You can replace a piece of clothing for far less than the cost of a new doll, and a stain on a doll is permanent.Use it anyway if you must, because you're attached to the fabric, but there are a few mitigation strategies to know about. The first approach is lining the clothing's inside with light-coloured fabric to make a barrier between the dark dye and the doll's skin. You could instead use the clothing for short durations only and remove it right away after use. Neither is foolproof, though both minimise the risk.

Where to Shop Safely
If it's clothing for a doll you're after, pick a vendor who comprehends dye migration and has tested their fabrics, as that's safest. Doll-specific clothing brands are ordinarily aware of the issue and select their fabrics accordingly, which is why their clothing is more expensive but also more reliable. Gambling is the right word for generic clothing from high street shops, where cheaper clothing means a higher risk. When buying generic clothing, test it before use, every time.

Wash Several Times Before Use
It's also worth knowing there's a seasonal factor. Heat accelerates the process, so dye migration is worse in warm weather. What passes in winter could fail in summer, especially with the doll stored in a warm room. If you're buying new clothing in summer, test it more thoroughly, and consider washing it several times before use. Heat will cause any residual dye to migrate faster, so the same applies if you're storing a doll in a warm room.

Harder to Spot at First, Obvious Later
The stain, if it occurs, is worth getting to grips with. Because the dye spreads through the material rather than sitting on the surface, dye migration stains are typically diffuse rather than sharp. No crisp fabric outline appears; the region just darkens or discolours usually. The stain spreads and deepens, so what's hard to spot at first becomes more clear over time. It can't come out once it's set; the alternatives are clothing to cover it or acceptance as part of the doll's history.

Don't Skimp on the Thirty Seconds
As much as the test itself, the testing method matters. Do the whole thirty seconds of rubbing; cutting it short means a slow bleed could slip through. Don't go straightforward. Rub firmly, stain-removal style, because the fabric will experience that kind of pressure against the doll's skin. Every test gets a clean patch of the white cloth, as a patch already stained by an earlier test gives a false result. One more thing: wet, not dry. Water activates the dye transfer, so that's how the fabric gets tested.

Dark Patterns on a Light Background
In a fabric with multiple colours, the darkest section is the one to test first. It's possible for a fabric to pass on the light sections but fail on the dark ones, and it's the dark sections that will stain the doll. Watch fabrics with dark patterns on a light background particularly closely; the dark parts bleed. When unsure, test each colour separately.

Fabric, Temperature and Pressure
There's the matter of how long a fabric needs to be in contact with the doll before it stains. How long? That varies enormously with the fabric, the temperature and the pressure. Within an hour some fabrics will stain, whereas others take days or weeks. Don't hope a fabric that failed the test will behave; assume it will stain finally and steer clear of it totally, which is the safest approach. Each exposure adds to the bleed and the bleed can't be reversed, so no exposure time is safe for a fabric that bleeds.

Inspecting a Second-Hand Doll
Check a used doll for dye migration before purchase; it's worth the effort. Dark patches on the thighs, back, or buttocks are the signs to look for, being the most common regions for staining. Because the stains are permanent and impact the doll's appearance, a doll with evident dye stains is worth less than one without. What it costs to cover the stains, with clothing or a new body, is part of the price of a used doll with stains; full price for a soiled doll is too much.

Test Every New Piece of Clothing
Of all the maintenance habits a doll owner can develop, the wet-white-cloth test is the single most significant. It avoids the most common cause of permanent damage while taking two minutes and costing nothing. Skipping it because you're in a hurry is a bad habit, so make it part of your routine and test every new piece of clothing. The five minutes saved by skipping the test could end up costing you a doll.
