How To Avoid Dye Migration: A Simple Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test
This comes first among everything a new doll owner could be told, and it's also what gets ignored most frequently. Dark fabric can transfer colour onto the doll's skin, a process known as dye migration, and the effect is permanent. Scrub as hard as you like, with whatever cleaning product or approach you fancy, and a stain that's been absorbed into TPE will still be there. Start with an uncomplicated test of two minutes that costs nothing, because prevention is the only defence there is.

A Few Hours in a Warm Room
Behind it all sits some simple chemistry. TPE is an oil-based material, and dark dyes are typically oil-soluble, which means the dye migrates from the fabric into the TPE like water soaking into a sponge. The process starts straight away on contact and accelerates with heat and pressure, so a dark dress left on a doll for a few hours in a warm room is enough to cause a permanent stain. On pale dolls dark marks are impossible to miss, so it's especially apparent there, though it takes place on every skin tone to some degree.

Step by Step: Testing Fabric for Dye
The test itself is simple to do. Sample a small piece of the fabric, ideally from an inside seam where it won't be seen, and soak it thoroughly in clean water. Press the wet fabric firmly onto a white cloth, a cotton bud or a piece of kitchen paper and keep rubbing for about thirty seconds. Don't put the fabric on her if any colour transfers to the white cloth, because it will stain your doll. Use it without worry when the white cloth stays clean; that fabric is safe.

Pass the Water Test and You're Safe
Dye transfer is activated by the moisture naturally present on the doll's skin; water simulates that, hence its use in the test. Wet fabric on damp skin transfers more dye than dry fabric on dry skin, so the water test shows you the worst case, which is precisely what you want. Passing the water test means the fabric is safe for normal use. If it fails, it will stain, and there's no way around it.

Test Every New Piece of Clothing
You should repeat the test with every new piece of clothing, including ones from a brand you've used before. What was safe last year might not be this year: manufacturing processes change, and dye batches vary. What the test takes is two minutes; what it gives you is a doll that looks decent for years instead of permanent dark marks on her thighs. Buyers who learn this the hard way end up purchasing replacement dolls, so there's no excuse for skipping it.

Dark Colours, Cheap Dyes and Waxy Coatings
Dark colours, cheap dyes, a little waxy or coated feel: those are the warning signs of a fabric likely to fail the test. Pay most attention to black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple, the worst offenders, whose dyes are concentrated and oil-soluble. Bright neon colours are also unsafe, because they use substantial quantities of pigment. Properly dyed fabric bleeds less than cheaply dyed fabric, which is why expensive clothing is often safer than cheap clothing, although there's no guarantee.

White, Cream, Beige and Pale Pastels
Safest of all are light colours, natural fibres, and anything pre-washed. Virtually invariably safe are white, cream, beige and pale pastels, since there's not enough pigment to cause apparent staining. Dye stays put more firmly in cotton, linen and other natural fibres than in synthetics, so they're less likely to bleed. Having released most of its excess dye in the wash, pre-washed fabric is less likely to transfer onto the doll. Doubtful about a piece? Pre-wash it before putting it on the doll.

Some Fabrics Bleed No Matter What
Tests fail, but that's not the end: a few things can be tried before giving up on the fabric. Washing the fabric several times in hot water with a small quantity of white vinegar can help set the dye and reduce bleeding. Try leaving the fabric in a saltwater solution overnight: salt acts as a mordant, which binds the dye to the fibres. Some fabrics are hopeless and will bleed no matter what you do, and these approaches don't consistently work, but wanting a particular piece of clothing poorly enough makes them worth trying.

The Safest Option Is Not to Use It
Not employing it is the safest option if a fabric still fails after washing. Stains on dolls are permanent, and a new doll is far more expensive than a replacement piece of clothing. When attachment to the fabric wins and you want to use it in any case, a few mitigation strategies are on offer. Attempt a light-coloured inner lining; it acts as a barrier between the dark dye and the doll's skin. You could instead use the clothing for short spans only and remove it right away after use. Foolproof they're not, but they do minimise the risk.

Cheaper Clothing, Higher Risk
Your safest bet when acquiring doll clothing is vendors who comprehend dye migration and have tested their fabrics. Their awareness of the issue, which is usual among doll-specific clothing brands, shows in their choice of fabrics, so their clothing is more costly but also more reliable. The cheaper the clothing, the higher the risk, and generic clothing from high street shops is a gamble. When acquiring generic clothing, test it before use, every time.

Storing a Doll in a Warm Room
Seasons play a part too, and it's worth knowing about. Warm weather makes dye migration worse, since heat accelerates the process. A fabric might pass the test in winter and fail it in summer; a warm room for storing the doll makes that particularly likely. When buying new clothing in summer, be more detailed with the test, and consider a number of washes before use. If you're storing a doll in a warm room, the same applies, as the heat will make any residual dye migrate faster.

Diffuse, Not Sharp
Worth understanding is the stain itself, if it happens. Not sharp but diffuse: that's how dye migration stains normally look, because the dye spreads through the material rather than sitting on the surface. They look like the whole region has darkened or discoloured, not like the fabric has left a clear outline. Originally it's harder to spot. Over time it's more apparent, because the stain spreads and deepens. There's no fixing a set stain, so you either cover it with clothing or accept it as part of the doll's history.

Staying away from False Results
Don't overlook the testing technique, which matters as much as the test itself. Do the whole thirty seconds of rubbing; cutting it short means a slow bleed could slip through. Treat the cloth like a stain you want gone, since firm pressure is what the fabric will experience against the doll's skin. Fresh cloth for each test, please: a section already soiled from a previous test gives a false result. Fabric goes in wet, not dry, because it's water that activates the dye transfer.

Multi-Coloured Clothing and the Dye Test
When a fabric has multiple colours, test the darkest section first. Pass on light, fail on dark: a fabric might do both, and the dark sections are what will stain the doll. Dark parts bleed, which is why fabrics with dark patterns on a light background need particular care; test each colour separately if you're not sure.

The Bleed Is Cumulative
Another point is how long a fabric needs to sit against the doll before staining happens. You'll find vast variation, according to the fabric, the temperature, and the pressure. There are fabrics that will stain within an hour and others that take days or weeks. The reasonable assumption is that a fabric that fails the test will stain finally, so avoid it entirely. A little at a time it adds up and never reverses, which is why a fabric that bleeds has no safe exposure time.

Don't Pay Full Price for a Stained Doll
Buyers of a used doll should check for dye migration before purchase. Check the thighs, back and buttocks for dark patches, since they're the most widespread regions for staining. A doll with noticeable dye stains is worth less than one without, because the stains are permanent and affect the doll's appearance. What it costs to cover the stains, with clothing or a new body, is part of the price of a used doll with stains; full cost for a stained doll is too much.

One Test, Every Time
Any doll owner's most vital maintenance habit, by a distance, is the wet-white-cloth test. Costing nothing and taking two minutes, it heads off the most usual cause of permanent damage. Skipping it because you're in a hurry is a terrible habit, so make it part of your routine and test every new piece of clothing. Five minutes saved by skipping the test is an inadequate trade if it costs you a doll.
