How To Avoid Dye Migration: Utilising The Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test
Often ignored, and yet it's the single most major piece of advice any new doll owner can receive. What's dye migration? Dark fabric transferring colour onto the doll's skin, and it's permanent as soon as it happens. You can't remove a stain that's been absorbed into TPE, whatever cleaning goods, technique or scrubbing you throw at it. Your only defence is preventing it, and that begins with a straightforward, free test that takes two minutes.

TPE Is Oil-Based, Dark Dyes Are Oil-Soluble
Blame chemistry for this one. TPE is an oil-based material, and dark dyes are ordinarily oil-soluble, which means the dye migrates from the fabric into the TPE like water soaking into a sponge. Starting immediately on contact and accelerating with heat and pressure, the process means a dark dress left on a doll for a few hours in a warm room is enough to cause a permanent stain. This is especially noticeable on pale dolls, where dark marks are impossible to miss, but it happens on every skin tone to some degree.

If the Cloth Stays Clean, You're Safe
Simplicity is the point of the test itself. Cut off a small piece of fabric (an inside seam where nobody will see is ideal) and get it thoroughly wet with clean water. Step two is the rub. Opt for a white cloth, a cotton bud or kitchen paper and work the wet fabric against it, firmly, for about thirty seconds. Should any colour transfer to the white cloth, the fabric will stain your doll and shouldn't go on her. You can use the fabric without worry if the white cloth stays clean, since it's safe.

Pass the Water Test and You're Safe
The test uses water because water simulates the moisture that's naturally present on the doll's skin, the thing that activates the dye transfer. Wet fabric on damp skin transfers more dye than dry fabric on dry skin, so the water test shows you the worst case, which is exactly what you want. When the fabric passes the water test, you can treat it as safe for typical use. Fail, and it will stain; there's no way around it.

Even the Same Brand Needs Testing
Repeat the test for every new piece of clothing, even when you've used the same brand before. A fabric that was safe last year might not be safe this year, thanks to changing manufacturing processes and varying dye batches. Permanent dark marks on her thighs are the alternative to a doll that looks great for years, and the test that decides it takes two minutes. No excuse exists for skipping it; buyers who learn this the hard way end up buying replacement dolls.

Cheap Dye Bleeds More
Failing the test most regularly: dark colours, cheap dyes, and anything that feels a little waxy or coated. Pay most attention to black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple, the worst offenders, whose dyes are concentrated and oil-soluble. Neon colours are dangerous too, since they use sizable quantities of pigment. Spending more often acquires safer clothing, since cheaply dyed fabric is more likely to bleed than properly dyed fabric, but the difference isn't guaranteed.

Fabrics That Are Safest
If you want the safest types of fabric, go for light colours, natural fibres, and anything that's been pre-washed. With white, cream, beige and pale pastels you're virtually invariably safe, because there's not enough pigment to cause apparent staining. Natural fibres like cotton and linen grip dye more firmly than synthetics tend to, so they're less likely to bleed. Fabric that's been pre-washed isn't carrying as much excess dye, having already released most of it, and so is less likely to transfer onto the doll. Any new clothing should be pre-washed before it goes on the doll, when in doubt.

Salt Acts as a Mordant
Tests fail, but that's not the end: a few things can be attempted before giving up on the fabric. It can help to set the dye and lessen bleeding if you wash the fabric a number of times, in hot water with a small quantity of white vinegar. Overnight soaking in a saltwater solution helps too, with the salt working as a mordant to bind the dye to the fibres. These methods don't consistently work, and some fabrics will bleed no matter what you do, but they're worth trying if you truly want to use a specific piece of clothing.

A Barrier Between Dye and Skin
If it's still failing after washing, don't use it, which is the safest alternative. A stain on a doll is permanent, and the cost of a new doll is far higher than the cost of replacing a piece of clothing.Mitigation strategies are available for anyone who's attached to the fabric and wants to use it anyway. What helps is a light-coloured fabric lining that sits between the dark dye and the doll's skin as a barrier. Another choice is short spans of use only, with the clothing removed right away after use. The risk is lessened by both, though neither is foolproof.

Where to Shop Safely
Clothing for a doll is safest bought from a retailer who understands dye migration and has tested their fabrics. Usually aware of the issue, doll-specific clothing brands pick their fabrics accordingly, and that's why their clothing is more expensive but also more reliable. A gamble is what you're taking with generic clothing from high street shops, and the cheaper it is the higher the risk. Acquiring generic? Invariably test it before use.

Dye Migration Is Worse in Warm Weather
One more thing worth knowing about: a seasonal factor. Dye migration is worse in warm weather, because heat accelerates the process. Especially if the doll is stored in a warm room, summer can turn a winter pass into a fail. Summer purchases of new clothing deserve a more comprehensive test and, possibly, a number of washes before use. Any residual dye will migrate faster in the heat, so the same applies if you're storing a doll in a warm room.

Harder to Spot at First, Obvious Later
Should it occur, the stain itself is worth understanding. Because the dye spreads through the material rather than sitting on the surface, dye migration stains are ordinarily diffuse rather than sharp. They appear as a general darkening or discolouration of the area, rather than a clear outline of the fabric. As the stain spreads and deepens, it goes from hard to spot initially to more obvious over time. When it's set, it's set: it can't be removed, so the only options are to cover it with clothing or accept it as part of the doll's history.

Use a Fresh Section of Cloth Each Time
A good testing technique matters as much as the test itself. Don't skimp on the thirty seconds of rubbing, because a quick rub can miss a slow bleed. Rub firmly, as though you're attempting to remove a stain, because that's the pressure the fabric will experience against the doll's skin. Never reuse a section: a cloth already soiled from a previous test will give a false result. Don't test it dry; test the fabric wet, since water is what activates the dye transfer.

The Dark Parts Are the Ones That Bleed
When a fabric has multiple colours, test the darkest section first. Pass on light, fail on dark: a fabric might do both, and the dark sections are what will stain the doll. Dark parts bleed, which is why fabrics with dark patterns on a light background need particular care; test each colour separately if you're not sure.

Assume a Failed Fabric Will Stain Eventually
People ask how much contact time a fabric needs before it stains the doll. Three things decide it, the fabric, the temperature and the pressure, and the result varies vastly. Certain fabrics will stain within an hour, with others taking days or weeks. Assume it'll stain finally. A fabric that fails the test should be steered clear of totally. Don't look for a safe exposure time with a fabric that bleeds; the bleed is cumulative and irreversible.

Clothing or a New Body to Hide the Damage
For customers who are purchasing a used doll, dye migration is worth checking before purchase. Where staining most commonly takes place, the thighs, back or buttocks, is where to look for dark patches. Apparent dye stains are permanent and affect the doll's appearance, so a stained doll is worth less than one without them. Acquire a stained used doll only at a cost that factors in covering the stains (with clothing or a new body), which is not full cost.

The Single Most Important Maintenance Habit
When it comes to maintenance habits, the wet-white-cloth test is the single most important one any doll owner can develop. Costing nothing and taking two minutes, it heads off the most typical cause of permanent damage. Testing every new piece of clothing should become part of your routine; being in a hurry is no excuse to skip it. It might cost you a doll, the five minutes you save by skipping the test.
