How To Avoid Dye Migration: The Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test Explained
Of everything a new owner could be told, this is the most vital, and it's the most often brushed aside. When dark fabric transfers colour onto the doll's skin, that's dye migration, and once it takes place it's permanent. Absorbed into TPE, a stain merely can't be removed, by any cleaning product, any technique or any quantity of scrubbing. Prevention is all you've got, and it starts with an uncomplicated two-minute test that costs nothing.

Why Staining Happens So Fast
The cause is chemistry, plain and uncomplicated. Fabric dye ends up in the TPE like water soaking into a sponge, and the reason is TPE being an oil-based material with usually oil-soluble dark dyes. Warm room, a few hours, a dark dress left on the doll: enough to cause a permanent stain, since the process accelerates with heat and pressure. Especially noticeable on pale dolls, where dark marks are impossible to miss; still, every skin tone suffers to some degree.

If Colour Transfers, Don't Use the Fabric
Nothing fancy is needed for the test itself. Wet a small, hidden piece of the fabric, ideally from an inside seam, fully with clean water. About thirty seconds of firm rubbing is all it takes; press the wet fabric against a white cloth, a cotton bud, or kitchen paper. If any colour transfers to the white cloth, the fabric will stain your doll, and you should not put it on her. If nothing shows up on the white cloth, the fabric is safe and you can use it without worry.

Testing for the Worst-Case Scenario
Simulating the moisture naturally present on the doll's skin, water activates the dye transfer in the test just as that moisture does in real life. Dry fabric on dry skin transfers less dye than wet fabric on damp skin, so testing with water gives you a worst-case situation, which is exactly what you want. Ordinary use is safe for fabric that passes the water test. When it fails it will stain, and there's no way round it.

No Excuse for Skipping It
Even if you've used the same brand before, the test should be repeated for every new piece of clothing. A fabric that was safe last year might not be safe this year, thanks to changing manufacturing processes and varying dye batches. Two minutes of testing decides whether the doll looks good for years or ends up with permanent dark marks on her thighs. Nothing excuses skipping it, and it's the customers who learn this the hard way who end up buying replacement dolls.

Expensive Clothing Is Often Safer
Beware dark colours, cheap dyes, and marginally waxy or coated fabrics, the types most likely to fail the test. For the worst offenders, look to black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple; their dyes are concentrated and oil-soluble. Sizable amounts of pigment make bright neon colours hazardous as well. Spending more often purchases safer clothing, since cheaply dyed fabric is more likely to bleed than properly dyed fabric, but the difference isn't guaranteed.

Cotton and Linen Hold Dye Better
You'll be safest with light colours, natural fibres and anything that's been pre-washed. Nearly invariably safe are white, cream, beige and pale pastels, since there's not enough pigment to cause noticeable staining. Dye stays put more firmly in cotton, linen and other natural fibres than in synthetics, so they're less likely to bleed. Having released most of its excess dye in the wash, pre-washed fabric is less likely to transfer onto the doll. Doubtful about a piece? Pre-wash it before putting it on the doll.

Worth Trying for a Favourite Piece
Giving up on a failed fabric can wait, since there are a few things you can try. Hot water and a small amount of white vinegar, applied over several washes, can help set the dye and lessen bleeding. An overnight saltwater solution soak can also help the fabric, as salt works as a mordant and binds the dye to the fibres. They don't consistently work. Some fabrics will bleed no matter what you do. Still, they're worth attempting for a specific piece of clothing you truly want to use.

Mitigation Strategies for a Favourite Piece
A fabric that still fails after washing is best not used at all; that's the safest option. It costs far less to replace a piece of clothing than to acquire a new doll, and a stain on a doll is permanent.Love the piece too much to bin it? A few mitigation strategies exist. A lining of light-coloured fabric on the inside of the clothing puts a barrier between the dark dye and her skin. Or limit it to short periods only, taking it off immediately after use. These won't be foolproof, but they do lessen the risk.

Purchase From Sellers Who Understand Dye Migration
If it's clothing for a doll you're after, choose a retailer who understands dye migration and has tested their fabrics, as that's safest. Opting for their fabrics accordingly, doll-specific clothing brands are usually aware of the issue, which is why their clothing costs more but is also more reliable. Higher risk comes with cheaper clothing, and generic clothing from high street shops is a gamble regardless. If you're buying generic clothing, always test it before use.

Wash Several Times Before Use
One more thing worth knowing about: a seasonal factor. Dye migration gets worse when the weather is warm, heat being what accelerates the process. There's a risk that a fabric passing the test in winter fails in summer, especially when the doll is stored in a warm room. Summer purchases of new clothing deserve a more comprehensive test and, possibly, several washes before use. Storing a doll in a warm room calls for the same care, since the heat will cause any residual dye to migrate faster.

Harder to Spot at First, Obvious Later
A bit of understanding about the stain itself, if it takes place, is rewarding. Not sharp but diffuse: that's how dye migration stains usually look, because the dye spreads through the material rather than sitting on the surface. You get a general darkening or discolouration across the area. A clear outline of the fabric, you don't. This makes them harder to spot at first but more plain over time, because the stain spreads and deepens. Once it's set, it can't be removed, and the only alternatives are to cover it with clothing or accept it as part of the doll's history.

Pressure That Matches the Doll's Skin
A great testing method matters as much as the test itself. Cut the rubbing short and you might miss a slow bleed, so don't skimp on the thirty seconds. A light touch tells you nothing; rub as though you're trying to remove a stain, as that's the pressure the fabric faces against the doll's skin. If the cloth is already stained from a previous test, the result will be false, so use a fresh section of the white cloth every time. A dry test would miss it, because water is what activates the dye transfer; test the fabric wet.

Test Each Colour Separately
For a fabric with multiple colours, begin by testing its darkest section. Passing on the light sections of a fabric tells you little, because the dark sections might fail and they're what will stain the doll. Any doubt? Test each colour on its own. And take particular care when a dark pattern sits on a light background, as the dark parts are the ones that bleed.

Cumulative and Irreversible
Another point is how long a fabric needs to sit against the doll before staining occurs. No single answer: it depends on the fabric, the temperature, and the pressure, and it varies hugely. Within an hour some fabrics will stain, whereas others take days or weeks. In the end, any fabric that fails the test will stain, so the safest approach is to stay away from it entirely. Exposure time can't be made safe for a fabric that bleeds, because the bleed is cumulative and irreversible.

Inspecting a Second-Hand Doll
If you're buying a used doll, dye migration is worth checking before you purchase. Check the thighs, back and buttocks for dark patches, since they're the most usual regions for staining. Apparent dye stains are permanent and impact the doll's appearance, so a stained doll is worth less than one without them. Purchase a soiled used doll only at a cost that factors in covering the stains (with clothing or a new body), which is not full cost.

Final Word on Dye Migration
Of all the maintenance habits a doll owner can develop, the wet-white-cloth test is the single most important. What you get for two minutes and no outlay is protection against the most widespread cause of permanent damage. Work it into your routine so that every new piece of clothing gets tested, hurry or no hurry. Five minutes saved by skipping the test is a bad trade if it costs you a doll.
