Joint-Loosening A New Sex Doll After Unboxing: The Proper Method
She looks incredible out of the box, yet her arm won't move when you attempt to bend it into a pose. Your instinct is to push harder. Still won't move. You're suddenly convinced you've faulty her, or that she arrived damaged, or that you've wasted your money. Put the arm down. Completely ordinary, this is, and the solution is simpler than you think.

A Loose Joint Is Worse Than a Tight One
From the factory, dolls come with tight joints by design, not through any manufacturing mistake. Holding a pose in any position, standing, sitting or lying, requires joints that are tight enough. A loose joint is the larger problem on a substantial doll, since the doll can't hold any pose at all. Manufacturers play safe and err on the side of tight, so you'll need to break the joints in before you can use them properly.

Why a Stiff Doll Is the Better Doll
The first thing to understand is why the joints are tight. Joints that are too loose out of the box can't support the significant weight of a heavy doll, and she'll sag within hours of being posed. A longer practical life comes from tight joints, since they can be loosened gradually over time without getting too loose too quickly. Give a stiff doll a week or two of working in and the joints end up perfectly balanced. A loose arrival can't tighten back up, and within months you'll be fighting sagging.

Not Every Joint Is Equally Tight
Tightness varies by joint, and that's the second thing to grasp. Because they bear the most weight, the hip, knee and shoulder joints are generally the tightest. Bearing less weight, the neck, wrist and ankle joints are usually the looser ones. The elbow and wrist joints are somewhere in between. Joint experiences differ, and the hips in particular might take significantly more effort to break in than the neck, so it helps to know this up front.

The Details That Matter
Loosening joints is a direct technique, though the details matter. A hairdryer on warm, never hot, held six inches or so from the joint, for thirty to sixty seconds each, is the approach. Easier movement, no stress on the surrounding material: that's what warm air softening the TPE around the joint gives you. Once the joint is warm, gently move it through its full range of motion a number of times, taking care not to force anything. Go through the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles one by one, repeating the process each time.

How Heat Helps Joints Hold Their New Position
The reason the warm-up matters is that TPE, as a thermoplastic, softens when heated and firms up when cooled. When you warm the joint, you're temporarily softening the material so that it moves more easily, and when the doll cools down, the material firms back up and the joint holds its new position. Cold rooms keep dolls stubborn even after weeks of use, while a warm-up makes a stiff doll much more pliable; the material's response to temperature explains both.

Warm It More, Then Try Again
Set aside a full hour for the first session. You might find it excessive, but it decides whether you end up with a doll you'll genuinely pose or one stuck in one position because you gave up. Give the neck ten minutes, each shoulder and elbow ten, each hip and knee ten, and each wrist and ankle five. Stop if a joint resists more than it should, and otherwise move each one slowly through its full range, never forcing anything. Warm it more, then try again.

Patience With Stubborn Hips
Hip joints get their own mention since they're the most stubborn. Bearing the most weight, the hips are usually the tightest joints on the doll. A weighty doll's hip joints may be honestly tough to move at first, and may not feel natural until after a number of sessions. You mustn't panic if the hips won't move on the first day. Stop once you've warmed them up and moved them as far as they'll go, and attempt again tomorrow. Hips often need a week or two to fully break in, and that's normal.

Patience and Warmth for Stubborn Shoulders
Second most stubborn are the shoulder joints. They're usually locked tight to keep the arms from sagging when she's standing, and they carry substantial weight too. Work every shoulder through everything it can do, lifting the arm in front, behind and to the side, and stop if something feels like it's resisting. If a shoulder won't raise thoroughly, patience and warmth can normally coax it into position, and forcing it will damage the joint.

Bend, Straighten and Slight Rotation
The knees sit somewhere in the middle. Though easier to move than the hips, they're still tighter than the arms, and they need to be worked through bending, straightening and slight rotation. The upright doll depends on her knees, so they tend to be tighter than the elbows, though the hips are tighter still. Extreme positions should wait until the knees have been faulty in properly, and in the meantime work them slowly through their range of motion.

A Stiff Neck and Natural Posing
Bearing the least weight, the neck joint is usually the loosest. Although some warmth may be needed to take it through its full range, it should move relatively freely from the start. It feels looser, but the neck is the easiest joint to damage if you force it, as well as the easiest to break in, so go gently. A freely moving neck points to an expressive doll, while a stiff one points to a doll that's harder to pose naturally.

Why a Tight Wrist Ruins Hand Poses
Mid-range is where the wrist and ankle joints sit. Reasonably loose is their normal state, since they don't bear much weight, but they can be tight enough to cause complications if you're not careful. Move them through their full range (bending, rotation, flexing), and stay away from forcing them into extreme positions before they've been damaged in. Both matter: a wrist that's too tight makes hands hard to pose, and an ankle that's too tight makes standing the doll hard.

Why Force Leads to Costly Repairs
Don't ever force anything, and I genuinely mean ever. A forced joint can snap the skeleton or tear the material, and both are costly repairs that could have been evaded. When a joint won't move, warm it more. If there's still no movement, stop and try again tomorrow. Patience is all there is to the approach, and a properly broken-in doll looks different from a forced one in every pose she holds.

Let Her Settle After Shipping First
A handful of functional tips will smooth the process. Where possible, opt for a warm room, as the ambient temperature affects the material and a doll feels stiffer in a cold room than a warm one. Don't skimp on the hairdryer: have it on hand and use it liberally. Leave the joints alone on the first day, since the doll needs to settle after shipping and a day of rest makes the material more supple when you do get to work.

The One-Week Schedule
A week of daily sessions, each shorter than the last, is about what the process takes. First session: about an hour, the longest. Second: perhaps forty minutes. By the fourth or fifth, five or ten minutes is enough to move each joint through its range and confirm that everything is working. Posing the doll without effort becomes possible after a week, once the joints feel natural. You'll end up preventing poses that need movement if you skip this process and the doll stays stiff, defeating the purpose of purchasing a poseable doll.

What Forcing Costs You Within Months
Correct joint loosening pays off notably. She holds any pose for hours without sagging and switches position in seconds rather than minutes, supplied she was faulty in correctly. Within months a doll that's been forced will have loose joints, and she'll sag into a slouch even when you're attempting to pose her upright. The difference between the two is entirely down to how you handle the first week, which is the only week where the joints are breakable-in rather than already set.

When a Joint Becomes Too Loose
There's generally a way to tighten a joint that becomes too loose, which can happen with weighty use over time. A small adjustment can restore the tension when a skeleton has adjustable screws, as some do. Where adjustment isn't possible you need a replacement joint, which is more costly but cheaper than purchasing the whole doll again. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to fix, so ask the producer what kind of adjustment is possible on your precise doll and don't wait until a joint is entirely loose.

Stiff Today, Natural for Years
What it comes down to is that day-one stiffness is a feature rather than a complication. The joints are tight because they need to be tight, and the process of loosening them is part of owning the doll. Be diligent with each joint, take your time, use heat, and never force anything. A doll that poses naturally for years is the reward, and it takes only a week of effort.
