Understanding Sex Doll Skeleton Joint Types Before You Buy
The skeleton, her internal framework, is what determines virtually everything about how she functions. It determines what poses are possible, how well she keeps them, how long she lasts, and how hard she is to move. It's a slip-up to wait until something goes wrong before thinking about the skeleton, as most customers do, because no hardware in the doll matters more. Replace the whole doll prematurely, or pay hundreds in repairs: that's the price of the incorrect choice.

Light Dolls, Basic Posing and Standard Joints
The two main types of skeleton differ in ways that matter hugely. A wireframe connecting bolt joints is how the standard skeleton, the basic one in most budget dolls, is built. For light dolls and straightforward poses it works well, and under 35kg, with a petite or skinny doll, a standard skeleton is broadly enough. Loosening takes place quick at 40kg, especially with extra chest weight, and a loose joint doesn't tighten back up.

No Way Around It: Hefty Dolls Need Yoga Skeletons
Stainless steel locking joints that handle far more weight are what the advanced or yoga skeleton, the upgrade, uses. They lock with a click and stay locked, which means sitting up, leaning forward or standing with her weight shifted are all poses she'll hold for hours without sagging. Mandatory rather than optional: that's the status of the yoga skeleton on BBW, large boobs, large booty and heavy curvy models, because it's designed for heavier dolls. If the doll is over 35kg, you need the yoga skeleton; there's no way around that.

Which Joint Type Should You Choose?
Just as the skeleton type does, joint type matters, and it's where a lot of buyers get caught out. There are two kinds of joints used in the yoga skeleton. Also known as clicking locks, ratchet joints have teeth that engage as you move the joint and hold it firmly in place. Also known as tightened screws, friction joints rely on resistance to hold a position and gradually loosen over time. Superior in practically every way, ratchet joints reliably hold position and last far longer.

No Easy Fix for Loose Joints
A false economy is what friction joints are, even though they're cheaper and simpler to manufacture and so turn up in budget dolls. Using the doll wears the friction down, so the joint loses its grip and she starts to sag. Expect noticeably looser friction joints within a year or two of routine use, with no easy way to restore them. The cost difference is relatively small, and ratchet joints, by contrast, can last for years without apparent degradation.

Where the Strain Lands on a Heavy Doll
The most strain falls on the hip, knee and shoulder joints, and those are the ones to ask about before ordering. With a heavier doll, these joints bear most of the posing weight, and when they loosen, hips make standing impossible and shoulders make posing arms impossible. Can't get a straight answer on the joint type in these precise positions? That's a red flag, so look elsewhere.

Why Reinforced Joints Matter on Heavier Dolls
There's a further question, joint reinforcement, which is distinct from joint type. In a reinforced joint there is additional material around the pivot point, preventing the metal from deforming under load. Even a ratchet joint can fail under extreme weight without reinforcement, which is why on heavier dolls reinforcement matters as much as joint type. Don't take a vague answer from the vendor about whether the hips, knees and shoulders are reinforced; push for something precise.

Do You Need an Articulated Spine?
The spine deserves attention too, as another part of the skeleton. Some dolls come with a fully articulated spine for twisting and bending; others have a more rigid spine that allows only basic movement. Photography and posing upside considerably from an articulated spine, which allows much more natural postures. A rigid spine will do for basic use but limits the doll's expressiveness, so steady photographers should pay the extra for the articulated alternative.

Neck Joints and Expressiveness
Last in the puzzle comes the neck joint, and it receives the least attention. Tilting, turning and nodding the head are permitted by a thoroughly articulated neck, adding vastly to expressiveness. Stiffness in photos and fewer natural expressions are the result of a rigid neck that locks the head in one position. It's worth asking before ordering, as the difference is subtle in specs but obvious in use.

Internal Mounting Points: The Detail Nobody Checks
Another thing that rarely occurs to customers is how the skeleton is secured inside the body. Over time on cheaper dolls the internal mounting points holding the skeleton can come loose or shift, and then the skeleton moves around inside the material. Reinforced mounting points keep the skeleton firmly anchored on better-built dolls. If a mounting point loosens, especially at the shoulders or hips where the stress is concentrated, it's the beginning of the end for the doll's functionality.

Foundation of Everything the Doll Can Do
Grasp this above all: the skeleton is not just a support structure. Everything the doll can do rests on it, and it's the only element you can't easily upgrade after purchase. You can change plenty after purchase, including wigs, eyes, hands and storage setups, but swapping the skeleton basically means rebuilding the doll, and most owners never do. With every pose you'll benefit from the skeleton, so purchase the best you can afford; it's the one upgrade that consistently pays off.

Heavier Dolls: The Yoga Skeleton Is Mandatory
Skipping the yoga skeleton on a heavier doll is a false economy, as it's mandatory. If you want to know where the best money goes, it's the additional few hundred pounds on the yoga skeleton, which determines whether the doll functions for years or fails within months. Photography and routine posing are solid reasons to consider the yoga skeleton even for a lighter doll, which would ordinarily be fine with the standard one. Any doll over 35kg, or any you plan to use heavily, calls for the yoga skeleton.

Don't Accept "Standard" as an Answer
After the skeleton itself, the joint type is the second most crucial decision. Ratchet joints outdo friction joints for holding positions and lasting, and the cost difference is small. Don't let the retailer get away with "standard" when you ask which type the doll has; it can mean either one. If the vendor can't tell you, that's a warning sign, and you should buy from someone who can.

Don't Assume Your Doll Has Reinforced Joints
Buyers frequently forget the third question, which concerns reinforcement. With reinforced joints you get greater strength, longer life and better position-holding under weighty loads. Any doll over 35kg, or with a big bust, must have reinforced joints. Without confirmation of reinforcement from the seller, assume it's not there and plan accordingly.

Additional Cost or Extra Savings?
Spine and neck are considerations four and five, and they matter more for photography than for basic use. If you plan to photograph your doll frequently, or if you want her to look natural in varied poses, an articulated spine and neck are worth the additional cost. Save the money for something else if you're buying for basic use and don't plan to pose her much; the rigid versions are fine.

Ask the Skeleton Question First
Ignored by most buyers until something goes wrong, the skeleton nevertheless determines everything about how the doll functions. Getting it right means a doll that feels natural and poseable for years. Get it mistaken and the list of difficulties starts with loose joints, moves on to sagging limbs, and ends with a doll that can't hold any position at all. Many poor purchases come down to one question that never got asked, and the skeleton should be the first you ask.

Warm TPE, Full Range of Motion
One more practical point: spend time breaking in the joints when your doll arrives, ahead of any ambitious posing. Forcing the joints will damage them; they're tight from the factory and need to be worked in gently. Using a hairdryer on a warm setting, loosen up the TPE around each joint, then put every joint through its full range of motion several times. This takes an hour and it's the single best investment you can make in the doll's long-term durability, because it loosens the joints evenly rather than stressing individual points.

Final Advice on Skeletons
Out of sight and easy to forget, the skeleton still does the work of moving the doll, holding her poses and keeping her constant. Before ordering, ask about joint type and reinforcement; then, on arrival, give it a right break-in. And purchase the best one you can afford. Compromise on anything else about the doll, but remember the skeleton is forever.
