Standing Feet Vs Non-Standing Feet Explained: A Buyer's Guide
Nobody gives standing feet a reflection until the day they need them, and that's when the vast difference becomes plain. On the spec sheet it looks minor, yet it changes what you can do with the doll, how she stores, how she photographs, and even how she wears over time. One of the simplest ways to stay away from an irritating purchase is to grasp the difference before you order.

Bolts or No Bolts
The difference comes down to something simple. Embedded in the soles of standing feet, metal bolts let the doll stand upright without support. Sitting or lying down is all a doll with non-standing feet can do, as they don't have these bolts, and trying to stand her will damage the feet. It all hinges on the bolts, with everything else following from whether they're present or not.

The Photographer's Choice
When it comes to photography and display, standing feet are essential. Anywhere that requires her to be upright, including a corner or a doorway, can display a doll that can stand unaided, and she can be photographed in full-length poses without evident supports. This opens up a wide range of poses and settings that aren't possible with non-standing feet, and it's the chief reason most photographers specify standing feet when ordering.

Standing Feet Are Also Essential for Showers
If you want shower use, standing feet are crucial as well. Lying her down in a shower is impractical and unsafe, so showering with your doll means she needs to stand. A wet environment is no problem for stability with standing feet, and the metal bolts ensure the feet don't absorb water the way non-standing feet would. This is a genuine safety consideration; water absorption in non-standing feet can lead to rust and eventual structural failure.

Hidden Rust Inside the Leg
Worth expanding is the shower use point, as it's the source of a lot of damaged dolls. There's foam or filler material inside the ankle with non-standing feet, and it absorbs water when it gets wet. Rust follows as the water attacks the metal skeleton inside the leg; it takes weeks or months to become evident, but it's fundamentally unfixable once it starts. Regardless of your precautions, the water will find its way in, which is why a doll with non-standing feet should never be in the shower nevertheless diligent you are.

When You Lack Room for a Hanging Setup
Standing feet can make storage easier as well, depending on the setup. Without needing a hanging hook or a storage case, a doll with standing feet can be stored upright in a corner, a wardrobe or a storage cabinet. Space-efficient, this suits buyers who don't have room for a hanging setup, and it's great for purchasers who want to display the doll rather than keep her hidden. With the standing feet, the doll can be stored noticeably and accessibly, which some purchasers prefer.

What Standing Feet Cost
The price you pay for standing feet is that they're marginally more pricey and somewhat heavier. A few percent additional on the cost is usual compared with a doll with non-standing feet, thanks to a small quantity of weight from the metal bolts and a more involved manufacturing process. For purchasers on an incredibly tight budget it's worth knowing about, even though the difference is small and it's usually worth the additional cost.

Distracting in Photos
Apparent bolts are the other drawback, if the feet are bare. Some purchasers find it distracting that the bolts might be visible in photos on a doll with high-heeled shoes or open-toed footwear. Because this small aesthetic issue can be solved by covering the feet with closed shoes or choosing footwear that hides the bolts, it's not a reason to steer clear of standing feet entirely.

A Completely Valid Choice
Fine for buyers who only want to use the doll in bed and don't plan to display her standing or shower with her, non-standing feet are also cheaper and lighter. A doll that lives largely in a bed or on a sofa gets by perfectly well on non-standing feet, with the savings available for upgrades like articulated hands or a better wig. It's a completely valid choice if you know what you want.

What Non-Standing Feet Feel Like
More comfortable to touch, for some purchasers, are non-standing feet, which are marginally softer and more elastic. You won't generally opt for on this alone, as it's a subtle difference, but it's worth knowing about if you're specifically looking for maximum softness. The feet of non-standing dolls feel more like the rest of her and less as if there's a hard core inside.

Tearing and Collapse
Attempting to stand the doll regardless, after forgetting what kind of feet they have, is the sizable risk customers run with non-standing feet. A typical oversight, and a damaging one: the doll's weight is too much for the foam inside the ankle, which will tear or collapse. A doll that can no longer stand, even if you attempt to support her, is the result, because the feet have been permanently damaged. Remember that non-standing feet are non-standing, if you're buying them, and don't be tempted to test their limits.

Decide Before You Order
One more question: can a doll that doesn't have standing feet be fitted with them after that? Short answer: no, not easily. Manufacturing is when the bolts get embedded in the soles; after that, you'd have to cut into the feet and install new hardware, which is expensive and frequently doesn't work as well as the original. Better than trying to add them later is purchasing a doll with standing feet in the first place, if you're considering a doll without them and think you might want them later.

Useful Advice by Use Case
Direct is the sensible advice for purchasers picking between standing and non-standing feet. Plans to photograph the doll, display her standing or use her in the shower mean you need standing feet. If it's only bed or sofa use you're after, and display is of no concern, non-standing feet are perfectly adequate. When in doubt, standing feet win, since they leave every alternative open and cost only a little more.

Upright Storage for Male Dolls
It's worth mentioning a gender consideration too. Male dolls tend to upside more than female dolls from standing feet, as they're heavier and more difficult to store in any other way. Lying down storage is a must for a 45kg male doll that can't stand, and it puts pressure on the body and requires more space. Purchasers who don't have a lot of room get a genuine benefit from standing feet, which give male dolls the ability to store upright.

Weighing Looks Against Function
Finally, the aesthetic difference between standing and non-standing feet is worth noting. On standing feet the bottom is slightly harder thanks to the bolts, and that can show when the doll is barefoot. Particularly on dolls with delicate features, some buyers find the somewhat industrial look of the hard soles less aesthetically satisfying. Non-standing feet are softer and more natural-looking, which some purchasers prefer. This trade-off only matters when you're photographing the doll barefoot, so factor it into your decision if barefoot photos are a priority.

A Bolt That Falls Out Can Make the Doll Collapse
There's a maintenance angle as well that's worth considering. Why check periodically? A loose bolt can damage the foot or the ankle, and if one falls out completely the doll can collapse. Check the bolts every few months by gently twisting them, and if they feel loose, tighten them with the suitable tool. Because non-standing feet have no hardware to come loose, they don't have this issue, and they're somewhat lower-maintenance in the long run.

How the Bolts Behave on Different Surfaces
How well the doll stands on distinct surfaces depends in part on the bolts. Grip is decent on carpet, and the doll is stable. Slipping bolts on hard flooring, particularly if the floor is silky, can mean the doll needs additional support to stay upright. Consider a small mat or a grippy pad beneath her feet if the surface is hard; it stops sliding. Standing feet on a hard floor is the case to know about here, since non-standing feet don't have this issue, the doll not standing in the first place.

Non-Standing Feet Are Slightly Shorter
Last of all, and frequently overlooked, is how standing feet impact the doll's overall proportions. Slightly changing the way the doll looks in barefoot photos is a possible effect of the small amount of length the bolts add to the foot. This is a subtle effect, and it's usually invisible in shoes, but it's worth knowing about if you're planning to photograph the doll barefoot and you care about precise proportions. The feet are a little shorter and more natural-looking on non-standing feet, which don't have this effect because they don't have the bolts.

The Bottom Line: Standing Feet Are Worth It
What it comes down to is that most buyers will find standing feet worth the additional cost, since they open up posing, display, storage, and shower options that non-standing feet don't. Skip them if, and only if, you're certain the doll will only be used in bed and won't be displayed or photographed standing. For the rest of purchasers, standing feet are the better choice, and rank among the simplest upgrades to justify.
