Understanding Sex Doll Skeleton Joint Types: A Complete Buyer's Guide
Virtually all of her functionality is determined by the skeleton, the framework inside your doll. Which poses are possible, how well she holds them, how long she lasts and how much effort she takes to move are all decided by it. Scarcely any buyers spare a reflection for the skeleton until something goes wrong, and that's a slip-up, since it is the single most crucial piece of hardware in the entire doll. The wrong choice can cost you hundreds in repairs or force you to replace the whole doll prematurely.

Light Dolls, Basic Posing and Standard Joints
There are two principal kinds of skeleton, and it matters hugely which one you pick. In most budget dolls you'll find the standard skeleton, which is the basic one and uses bolt joints connected by a wireframe. Don't worry about a standard skeleton if you're after a petite or skinny doll under 35kg; it's usually sufficient and fine for basic posing. Loosening occurs rapid at 40kg, especially with extra chest weight, and a loose joint doesn't tighten back up.

When the Upgrade Stops Being Optional
Stainless steel locking joints that handle far more weight are what the advanced or yoga skeleton, the upgrade, uses. She'll hold poses for hours without sagging, whether sitting up, leaning forward or standing with her weight shifted, since the joints click into place and stay. The yoga skeleton is a requirement, not an additional, on BBW, sizable boobs, big booty and substantial curvy models, as it's designed for heavier dolls. The yoga skeleton is required for anything over 35kg, and there's no getting around it.

The Joint Detail Most Buyers Overlook
The joint type matters as much as the skeleton type, and this is where a lot of purchasers get caught out. There are two kinds of joints used in the yoga skeleton. Teeth that engage as the joint moves are what hold a ratchet joint, also known as a clicking lock, firmly in place. Holding a position through resistance is what friction joints, also known as tightened screws, do until they gradually loosen over time. Because they hold their position reliably and last far longer, ratchet joints are superior in almost every way.

Friction Wears Down; Ratchets Last
They appear in budget dolls because friction joints are cheaper and simpler to manufacture, but they're a false economy. Use wears the friction down, the joint loses its grip, and the doll commences to sag. By the time a year or two of routine use has passed, friction joints are visibly looser than they were new and aren't easy to restore. By contrast, ratchet joints can last for years without visible degradation, and the cost difference between the two is relatively small.

When a Manufacturer Can't Tell You
Hip, knee and shoulder joints bear the most strain, so they're the ones you should invariably ask about before ordering. Impossible to stand is the doll with a loose hip joint, and impossible to pose her arms with a loose shoulder joint, because these joints bear most of the weight on a heavier doll. A red flag goes up if the producer can't tell you what type of joints are in these precise positions, and you should look elsewhere.

Ask the Seller About Reinforced Hips, Knees and Shoulders
Another question to ask is about joint reinforcement, which is separate from joint type. Reinforcement means additional material around the pivot point, which avoids the metal from deforming under load. On heavier dolls, reinforcement matters as much as the joint type itself, and a ratchet joint without reinforcement can still fail under extreme weight. Don't take a vague answer from the retailer about whether the hips, knees and shoulders are reinforced; push for something precise.

The Skeleton Part That Deserves More Attention
Add the spine to the parts of the skeleton that deserve attention. Basic movement is all a more rigid spine allows, whereas some dolls have a fully articulated spine that allows twisting and bending. A notable upgrade for photography and posing, the articulated spine allows for much more natural postures. A rigid spine limits the doll's expressiveness, though it's fine for basic use; routine photography makes the articulated alternative worth the additional cost.

Ask About the Neck Before You Order
The neck joint is the final piece of the puzzle, and it's the one that gets the least attention. With a fully articulated neck the head can tilt, turn and nod, adding massively to the doll's expressiveness. A rigid neck fixes the head in one position, which looks stiff in photos and limits the range of natural expressions. Though subtle in specs, the difference is evident in use, and worth asking about before ordering.

Why Loose Mounting Points Are the Beginning of the End
The skeleton's anchoring inside the body is a further question, and most purchasers never think about it. The mounting points inside a cheaper doll can come loose or shift over time, so the skeleton, held in place by them, moves around inside the material. Firmly anchored is how the skeleton stays on better-built dolls, thanks to reinforced mounting points. Pay most attention to the shoulders and hips, where the stress is concentrated; a loose mounting point is the beginning of the end for the doll's functionality.

Why You Should Buy the Best Skeleton You Can Afford
It's most significant to grasp that the skeleton isn't just a support structure. Everything the doll can do rests on it, and it's the only element you can't easily upgrade after purchase. A wig, a pair of eyes, a set of hands or a storage setup can be changed whenever you like, whereas a skeleton replacement means rebuilding the doll from the inside, something most owners never do. Invariably buy the best skeleton you can afford. It's the one upgrade that pays off every single time you pose her.

When a Standard Skeleton Is Fine, and When It Isn't
Mandatory for heavier dolls, the yoga skeleton can't be skipped without false economy. The best money you'll spend on the complete purchase is that extra few hundred pounds for the yoga skeleton, which determines whether she functions for years or fails within months. Lighter dolls usually get by on a standard skeleton, but if you plan to pose regularly or take photos, the yoga skeleton is worth considering. The right choice for any doll over 35kg, and any you plan to use heavily, is the yoga skeleton.

Ask Which Joint Type the Doll Has
After the skeleton itself, the joint type is the second most essential decision. Friction joints don't hold positions as well or last as long as ratchet joints, and the difference in cost is small. Ask which type the doll has. If the retailer says "standard", that doesn't settle it, because standard can mean either one. Should the seller be unable to tell you, that's a warning sign; buy from someone who can.

Planning Around Missing Reinforcement
Reinforcement comes up third, and it's the one customers tend to forget. They're stronger, they last longer, and under hefty loads reinforced joints hold their position better. Don't purchase a doll over 35kg, or with a substantial bust, without reinforced joints; they're essential. If the seller won't confirm reinforcement, assume it's absent and plan accordingly.

Extra Cost or Extra Savings?
Spine and neck are considerations four and five, and they matter more for photography than for basic use. Want her natural in varied poses, or plan steady photography? An articulated spine and neck are worth the extra. Not planning to pose her much? Then for basic use the rigid versions are fine, and you can save the money for something else.

Ask the Skeleton Question First
The part of the doll that determines everything about how she functions is the skeleton, which most customers ignore until something goes wrong. Right skeleton, and the doll feels natural and poseable for years. Get this incorrect and it unravels gradually: the joints loosen, the limbs sag, and eventually the doll can't hold any position at all. Frequently what makes a purchase solid or dreadful is a question you forgot to ask; start with the skeleton.

The Best Investment You Can Make in Durability
There's one final useful point, which is to spend time breaking in the joints when your doll arrives, before attempting ambitious posing. Forcing the joints will damage them; they're tight from the factory and need to be worked in gently. Warm the TPE around each joint with a hairdryer on a warm setting so it softens, and follow up by moving the joint through its complete range of motion a number of times. It takes just an hour, yet it's the best single investment in the doll's long-term durability, loosening the joints evenly without stressing individual points.

Final Advice on Skeletons
Whatever stability, movement and pose-holding the doll has comes from a part that you can't even see: the skeleton. Spend as much as you can on the skeleton, find out its joint type and reinforcement before ordering, and break it in carefully when it comes. Everything else about the doll can be negotiated, yet the skeleton is forever.
