Preventing Dye Migration: How The Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test Works
Ignored more than any other tip, this is still the single most critical thing a new doll owner can be told. Colour moving from dark fabric onto the doll's skin is called dye migration, and it's permanent once it has occurred. Cleaning products, techniques, scrubbing: none of them, nevertheless much you apply, will remove a stain that's been absorbed into TPE. Prevention is the only defence, and it starts with a straightforward test that takes two minutes and costs nothing.

Every Skin Tone Is at Risk
The cause is chemistry, plain and simple. Fabric dye ends up in the TPE like water soaking into a sponge, and the reason is TPE being an oil-based material with normally oil-soluble dark dyes. Starting straight away on contact and accelerating with heat and pressure, the process means a dark dress left on a doll for a few hours in a warm room is enough to cause a permanent stain. Dark marks on pale dolls are impossible to miss, which is why it's especially visible on them, though it occurs on every skin tone to some degree.

Rub It Against a White Cloth for Thirty Seconds
Nothing fancy is needed for the test itself. Wet a small, hidden piece of the fabric, ideally from an inside seam, fully with clean water. About thirty seconds of firm rubbing comes next, the wet fabric against a white cloth, cotton bud or kitchen paper. If any colour transfers to the white cloth, the fabric will stain your doll, and you should not put it on her. Clean cloth, safe fabric: use it without worry.

The Logic Behind the Wet Test
Water stands in for the moisture that's naturally present on the doll's skin, which activates the dye transfer, and that's why the test uses it. Exactly what you want is a worst-case scenario, and testing with water provides it because dry fabric on dry skin transfers less dye than wet on damp. Usual use is safe for fabric that passes the water test. If it fails, it will stain, full stop; there's no way around it.

Last Year's Safe Fabric Might Not Be Safe Now
A brand you've used before doesn't get you out of it; the test is repeated for every new piece of clothing. Manufacturing processes change, dye batches vary, and a fabric that was safe last year might not be safe this year. Two minutes of testing decides whether the doll looks decent for years or ends up with permanent dark marks on her thighs. There's simply no excuse for skipping it; the customers who end up purchasing replacement dolls are the ones who learned this the hard way.

Black, Dark Red, Dark Blue and Dark Purple
What tends to fail the test? Dark colours, cheap dyes, and anything that feels marginally waxy or coated. These four are the worst offenders: black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple, thanks to concentrated, oil-soluble dyes. Don't overlook bright neon colours, which are risky because they use sizable amounts of pigment. With cheaply dyed fabric more likely to bleed than properly dyed fabric, expensive clothing is regularly the safer bet, even though the difference isn't guaranteed.

Fabrics That Are Safest
You'll be safest with light colours, natural fibres and anything that's been pre-washed. Practically consistently safe are white, cream, beige and pale pastels, since there's not enough pigment to cause evident staining. Holding dye more firmly than synthetics, as cotton, linen and other natural fibres tend to, makes them less likely to bleed. Having released most of its excess dye in the wash, pre-washed fabric is less likely to transfer onto the doll. Before putting any new clothing on the doll, pre-wash it when in doubt.

Methods That Don't Always Work
If a fabric fails the test, there are a few things you can try before giving up on it. Washing the fabric a number of times in hot water with a small quantity of white vinegar can help set the dye and lessen bleeding. Bind the dye to the fibres with salt, which acts as a mordant, by soaking the fabric in a saltwater solution overnight. Success isn't certain: these approaches don't always work and some fabrics bleed anyway, though they're worth a shot for a specific piece of clothing you genuinely want to use.

A Barrier Between Dye and Skin
Safest by far is to not use a fabric that still fails after washing. Stains on dolls are permanent, and a new doll is far more expensive than a replacement piece of clothing. If you're attached to the fabric and want to use it in any case, there are a few mitigation strategies. A lining of light-coloured fabric on the inside of the clothing puts a barrier between the dark dye and her skin. Failing that, limit the clothing to short durations and remove it straight away after use. The risk is minimised by both, though neither is foolproof.

Tested Fabrics vs Unknown Fabrics
Seek out retailers who comprehend dye migration and have tested their fabrics when you're buying clothing for a doll; it's the safest approach. Opting for their fabrics accordingly, doll-specific clothing brands are usually aware of the issue, which is why their clothing costs more but is also more reliable. Generic high street clothing is a gamble, and the risk goes up the cheaper the clothing is. Always run the test on generic clothing before it's used.

Test More Thoroughly in Summer
Worth knowing about, too, is a seasonal factor. The warmer it gets, the worse dye migration is, since heat accelerates the process. A fabric that passes the test in winter might fail in summer, particularly if the doll is stored in a warm room. Buying new clothing in summer? Test it more fully, and consider washing it several times before use. Treat a doll stored in a warm room the same way; the heat will cause any residual dye to migrate faster.

Once It's Set, It's There for Good
Knowing what the stain looks like, if it takes place, is worthwhile. Dye migration stains tend to be diffuse and not sharp, because the dye goes through the material instead of staying on the surface. No crisp fabric outline appears; the region just darkens or discolours broadly. As the stain spreads and deepens, it goes from hard to spot originally to more apparent over time. After it's set, removal is impossible, and the choice is to cover it with clothing or live with it as part of the doll's history.

Test Wet, Not Dry
The test itself is only half of it; the testing approach matters as much. Cut the rubbing short and you might miss a slow bleed, so don't skimp on the thirty seconds. Put some weight behind it, as if you were trying to shift a stain, because the doll's skin will put the fabric under that same pressure. A soiled patch from a previous test would muddy things and give a false result, so each test needs a fresh section of the white cloth. And test the fabric wet rather than dry, because water is what activates the dye transfer.

Patterned Fabric Needs Extra Care
Multiple colours in the fabric? Test the darkest section first. Failing on the dark sections is possible even if a fabric passes on the light ones, and the dark sections are what will stain the doll. If you're not sure about a fabric, take each colour in turn and test it separately, being especially diligent with dark patterns on a light background, because the dark parts are the ones that bleed.

An Hour, or Days, or Weeks
How long does fabric need to touch the doll before staining takes place? How long? That varies hugely with the fabric, the temperature and the pressure. Staining can occur within an hour for some fabrics, or take days or weeks for others. Don't hope a fabric that failed the test will behave; assume it will stain finally and steer clear of it entirely, which is the safest approach. There's no safe exposure time for a fabric that bleeds, because the bleed is cumulative and irreversible.

Where Staining Is Most Common
Before purchase, dye migration is worth checking if you're buying a used doll. The thighs, back and buttocks are the most typical areas for staining, so look for dark patches there. The stains are permanent and affect the doll's appearance, which is why a doll with apparent dye stains is worth less than one without. What it costs to cover the stains, with clothing or a new body, is part of the price of a used doll with stains; full cost for a stained doll is too much.

Final Word on Dye Migration
Single most critical maintenance habit for any doll owner: the wet-white-cloth test. No cost, two minutes, and the most widespread cause of permanent damage is avoided. In a hurry? Test anyway. Every new piece of clothing, as part of your routine. You could lose a doll for the sake of the five minutes you save by skipping the test.
