Loosening Your Sex Doll's Joints After Unboxing: What To Do First
Out of the box she looks incredible. Then you go to bend her arm into a pose, and it won't move. You lean on it a bit more. The arm stays put. Your mind jumps to the worst: you've damaged her, she arrived damaged, or you've wasted your money. Pause right there. Relax, because this is totally usual and the solution is simpler than you think.

Why Manufacturers Leave Joints Stiff
Tight joints are how dolls leave the factory, and it's on purpose, not a manufacturing slip-up. For her to hold a pose in any position, standing, sitting or lying, the joints must be tight enough. Because a loose joint means a hefty doll can't hold any pose at all, it is worse than a tight one. Tight is the side manufacturers err on, so you've got to break the joints in before they can be used properly.

First, Understand Why the Joints Are Tight
First, it helps to know why the joints are tight. Joints on a weighty doll must support significant weight, so if they're too loose out of the box, the doll sags within hours of being posed. A doll with tight joints has a longer practical life because loosening can happen gradually over time without going too far too rapidly. You can work in a doll that arrives stiff over the course of a week or two, ending with perfectly balanced joints. If she arrives loose, she has no way to tighten back up, and sagging will be a battle within months.

Elbows and Wrists: The Middle Ground
Different joints have distinct levels of tightness, which is the second thing to understand. Hip, knee and shoulder joints are tight, ordinarily the tightest of all, due to bearing the most weight. Neck, wrist and ankle joints tend to be looser, because they bear less weight. The elbow and wrist joints are somewhere in between. Joint experiences differ, and the hips in particular might take considerably more effort to break in than the neck, so it helps to know this up front.

Warm, Not Hot: Six Inches for Thirty to Sixty Seconds
Details matter in the approach for loosening joints, which is otherwise simple. Keep the hairdryer about six inches from the joint, switched to warm and not hot, and give each joint thirty to sixty seconds. Warm air softens the TPE round the joint, and the joint then moves more easily with no stress on the surrounding material. With the joint warm, gently take it through its full range of motion several times; don't force anything. Repeat all this on every joint in turn, covering the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.

The Science Behind the Warm-Up
TPE is a thermoplastic, meaning it softens when heated and firms up when cooled, and that's why the warm-up matters. Heat the joint and the material temporarily softens, moving more readily; let the doll cool down and the material firms back up, holding the joint in its new position. That's the reason warming up helps so much, and the reason a doll left in a cold room can still be stubborn weeks into use.

Warm It More, Then Try Again
The right amount of time for the first session is a full hour. It sounds excessive, but it's the difference between a doll you'll really pose and a doll that ends up stuck in one position because you gave up. Ten minutes goes on the neck, ten on each shoulder and elbow, ten on each hip and knee, and five on each wrist and ankle. Each joint should be moved slowly through its full range, with no forcing, and you should stop if it resists more than it ought to. Warm it up some more and try again.

Don't Panic if the Hips Won't Move on Day One
A mention of their own is deserved by the hip joints, the most stubborn of the lot. Hips take the most weight, and generally end up the tightest joints on the doll. Heavy dolls can have hip joints that are truly difficult to move at first, and a number of sessions may be needed before they feel natural. Try not to panic if the hips won't move on the first day. Warm them up, go as far as they'll let you, then stop and attempt again tomorrow. It's ordinary for the hips to take a week or two to thoroughly break in.

Shoulders: The Second Most Stubborn
In terms of stubbornness, the shoulder joints are second. Significant weight is also borne by them, and they're ordinarily locked tight so the doll's arms don't sag when she's standing. Lift the arms forward, then backward, then out to the side to use the shoulders' full range of motion, and stop if anything resists. Damage to the joint is what forcing a shoulder gets you, while a shoulder that won't raise fully can normally be coaxed with patience and warmth.

Knees: The Middle Ground
Between the two extremes you'll find the knee joints. Tighter than the arms but easier than the hips, the knees need their full range worked, including bending, straightening and minor rotation. The upright doll depends on her knees, so they tend to be tighter than the elbows, though the hips are tighter still. Until the knees have been faulty in properly, don't force them into extreme positions, and work them through their range slowly.

Soft Does It, Even When the Neck Feels Loose
Loosest of all, normally, is the neck joint, since it bears the least weight. Free movement, relatively speaking, should be there from the start, though warmth may help it through its full range. Even though it feels looser, be mild: the neck is effortless to break in, but it's also the easiest joint to damage if you force it. When the neck moves freely, expect an expressive doll; when it's stiff, expect one that's harder to pose naturally.

Smaller Joints, Same Rules
The wrists and ankles sit somewhere in the middle. They carry little weight and are generally reasonably loose, but they can still be tight enough to cause complications if you're not cautious. Move them through their full range (bending, rotation, flexing), and steer clear of forcing them into extreme positions before they've been faulty in. Too tight a wrist makes it hard to pose the hands, and too tight an ankle makes it hard to stand the doll.

The One Rule That Matters Most
Never force a thing, and I mean it. You can snap the skeleton or tear the material by forcing a joint, and both are expensive repairs that could have been avoided. If a joint won't move, warm it more. Still not moving? Stop, and try again tomorrow. In every pose she holds, you can see whether a doll was broken in properly or forced, and patience is the complete technique.

Don't Start on Day One
Easier is what a few practical tips will make this process. The material is impacted by ambient temperature, so if possible work in a warm room, where a doll feels less stiff than in a cold one. A hairdryer should be within reach, and used liberally. On the first day, don't try to loosen the joints; the doll needs to settle after shipping, and the material will be more supple after a day of rest.

How Long Breaking In Really Takes
The process runs for about a week, with a session each day that's shorter than the previous one. The longest session is the first, at about an hour; the second is perhaps forty minutes, and by the fourth or fifth, five or ten minutes will do to move each joint through its range and confirm everything is working. The joints will feel natural after a week, letting you pose the doll without effort. If you skip this process, the doll will stay stiff, and you'll end up staying away from poses that need movement, which defeats the purpose of purchasing a poseable doll.

Forced Dolls Slouch
Proper joint loosening gets notable results. Hours without sagging in any pose, and new positions in seconds rather than minutes: that's the payoff for correct break-in. Within months a doll that's been forced will have loose joints, and she'll sag into a slouch even when you're attempting to pose her upright. Entirely down to your handling of the first week is the difference between the two, as that's the only week where the joints can be broken in and aren't already set.

Fixing Loose Joints Before They Fail
Over time, with hefty use, a joint can become too loose; there's normally a way to tighten it if so. Tension can be restored with a small adjustment on skeletons that have adjustable screws. Where adjustment isn't possible you need a replacement joint, which is more costly but cheaper than acquiring the whole doll again. Don't wait until a joint is completely loose to address it; the earlier you catch it, the easier it is to fix, and the manufacturer can tell you what kind of adjustment is possible on your particular doll.

Take Your Time, Use Heat, Never Force
At the end of the day, the stiffness you meet on day one is a feature, not an issue. They're tight because they need to be tight, and loosening them is part of what owning the doll requires. Be careful with each joint, take your time, use heat, and never force anything. A week of effort is all it takes, and the reward is a doll that poses naturally for years.
