A Beginner's Guide To Using A Sex Doll: What To Know Before You Start
Perhaps you've already bought your first doll, or perhaps you're about to. Either way, there's a brief spell of slight panic as you unbox a 35 kg silicone human, stand there in your living space, and ask yourself: now what? The answer to that question is this guide. No filler and no assumption that you have any idea what you're doing, just the hands-on essentials you'll truly need in the opening week plus the tips that will spare you from costly missteps in month one. It is worth reading it twice: once before she arrives and once again after, since the second read will make much more sense and helps you place things you skipped over first time round.

Once she's out of the package, shifting her about becomes much harder, so a few things are worth doing before the package is even open. Make a decision for where she's going to live: not "somewhere in the bedroom" but a correct area, whether that's a cupboard, a corner, or a carry case. The last thing you would like is to be making up storage at 11 p.m. with a bare doll in your arms, seeing as dolls are weighty and unwieldy. Prepare the space she'll rest on, be it a bed, floor, or carry case, and be sure it is clean and free of anything that could transfer dye, as deep-coloured blankets, poorly dyed fabrics, and anything that might shed colour are a risk. On carpet, put something smooth underneath her. Any low bed can give way under her load with time, so verify it will not.

Before she arrives, have everything you need ready:
1. Cornflour or baby powder (for TPE dolls)
2. A blow-dryer (for freeing up joints)
3. A spotless, pale-coloured cloth (for the dye check)
4. A wide-toothed wig comb (not a standard hairbrush)
5. Drying stands (for the orifices)
6. Mineral oil formulated for TPE (if applicable)
7. A soft cosmetic brush (for powdering)

None of this is costly, but all of it matters. Maybe £20 covers everything in the kit, and it is the distinction among a doll that holds its condition and one that does not. Go with maintenance opening the box in place of tearing into it, and if it is damaged, picture it first, as that is your sole protection for a guarantee claim. Once it is open, do a quick inspection: inspect for splits in the armpits and groin, check that all fingers are unbroken, and verify the head sculpt matches what you paid for. Take pictures of any difficulty straight away and tell the seller before you do anything else, as a claim gets considerably harder once the doll has been used or repositioned.

The aspect that catches practically every new buyer off guard comes next: she will feel inflexible. Tight joints are entirely normal straight from the factory and do not mean something is broken. Before you can pose her, you'll have to free up the joints, and the technique is uncomplicated. Use a hair dryer on a gentle setting, not hot, to soften the TPE at every joint, then slowly move each joint through its complete range of movement, working through the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. If a joint will not move, warm it more, and never force anything. Spend a full hour on this. It sounds excessive, but it's what separates a doll you will in fact pose from one that ends up stuck in a single position as you gave up.

She's heavier than she looks, and this surprises everyone. A 35 kg doll doesn't seem that heavy right until you lift her from a low position and the pressure is concentrated in the wrong places, so use good lifting technique, squatting down and lifting with your legs as opposed to your back. Keep her close to your body by taking hold under the armpits and bear hugging her if possible, as the closer she is to your centre of balance, the less load you will feel. TPE and silicone both hold body warmth reasonably well, so she's warmer than you expect, and the first time you contact her attentively she'll feel less plastic than you were probably expecting. This is the chief reason people say their dolls feel alive, not as of movement or AI, but since the cloth truly yields to touch in a manner that catches you off guard.

You will need to powder her routinely, as TPE gets clammy with time, especially in high temperatures or after cleaning, and a fine dusting of cornstarch or baby powder applied with a soft cosmetic brush holds the exterior even and dust-free, so do this at the end of every cleansing session. You'll also need to oil her every so often, since TPE sheds oil in time and needs replenishment, and a light coat of mineral oil designed specifically for TPE dolls every three months or so maintains the material soft and prevents drying out, though go easy seeing as too much oil makes the finish oily and picks up dust faster than dried-out skin does.

Consider of cleansing as a process, not a one-off. After use:
1. Take out any inserts and wash them separately
2. Wash the openings using warm water and mild detergent
3. Dry everything well with drying supports (15 to 20 minutes)
4. Powder the exterior with cornstarch or baby powder
5. Keep her the right way

This aspect isn't optional: skip it and mould will be developing inside her in as little as a few weeks. The entire procedure takes just about 45 minutes, which is longer than most owners anticipate, and it is the primary reason old hands switch to swappable inserts, which cut that time approximately in half.

The most common slip-up new owners make is not thinking about storage until it is a concern. Hanging is best, using a heavy-duty overhead hook rated for at least 60 kg with a dedicated loop, which holds her in a single position without putting stress on the joints, and this is the method most long-term owners use. Storing her lying down works too, but be careful: flat surfaces are fine and uneven ones aren't, and leaving her on her back for a long time can flatten the buttocks or breasts, so change the position now and then. Never leave her in direct sun, as UV damages both TPE and silicone and discolours wigs and coloured parts fast, so a cupboard or a covered storage box is ideal.

The internet has a lot of opinions about doll ownership, most of which are mistaken or exaggerated. Yes, she's bulky and her joints need maintenance, but you needn't be "careful" in the sense of walking on eggshells around her, as she's designed to be used and she's not made of glass. There's no need to be self-conscious: millions of owners own sex dolls, the market has expanded massively in the last ten years, and the shame has diminished fast, so owning one is an individual choice and not a flaw in character.

Treating her like a person isn't a requirement either. Building detailed characters and personalities for their dolls is aspect of the appeal for many owners, which is great, but you do not have to, and a doll for bodily pleasure and companionship without the roleplay is a totally valid way to use one. The everyday side is the only thing you genuinely need to get right, as everything else is individual taste and no one else gets a say on how you use something you bought.

Every owner develops their own regime, and mine if it helps is easy. Spend a couple of minutes limbering up the joints before every session to verify nothing is rigid, as opposed to a solid hour from the first time, and powder at the end of every clean without exception. Run the material test on any new clothes even if you've used the same brand before, keep a replacement wig ready as synthetic hair takes longer to dry than you'd anticipate and you do not want to be waiting, and keep her sensibly every time. Nothing here is difficult, it is simply the process that maintains your doll in good condition for many years on end as opposed to months.

The bulk of what you have to know will come from your first month, and the errors you make early tend to be minor ones when you're careful. The things that go wrong later are the costly ones, and they nearly always originate in something skipped in the early weeks. A joint eased too aggressively, a material tested on the doll as opposed to a cloth, a storage solution that looked fine until the pressure bedded into it. Take it slowly at the start and the rest takes maintenance of itself.

You'll also need to know what to do when something eventually goes wrong, as it will. A tear in the armpit, a loose joint, a mark that will not come out. Your instinct will be to panic and assume the doll is beyond saving, but nearly everything short of a snapped frame is fixable if you notice it early. TPE patch kits cost very little and handle tiny rips. Loose joints can be refitted or replaced. The one thing that does not come out is dye marks, which explains why the cloth test is so important. Find out which issues are fixable and quit worrying about the ones that aren't.

A doll is a big purchase and it deserves proper handling, but "serious" does not mean "difficult." Skip freeing up the joints, regular powdering, and right storage and you will be replacing her much sooner than you expected, but do them and you will get years out of her. The initial week is the hardest, and after that it turns into routine. More info at this rosslink.
