How To Avoid Dye Migration: The Wet-White-Cloth Fabric Test Guide
Of everything a new owner could be told, this is the most significant, and it's the most frequently brushed aside. Dye migration means dark fabric passing its colour onto the doll's skin, and the result can't be undone. Scrub as hard as you like, with whatever cleaning item or technique you fancy, and a stain that's been absorbed into TPE will still be there. If you want a defence, prevention is the only one, and an uncomplicated test taking two minutes at no cost is where it starts.

Like Water Soaking Into a Sponge
There's a chemical reason behind all this. Like water soaking into a sponge, dye migrates from the fabric into the TPE, because TPE is an oil-based material and dark dyes are typically oil-soluble. Contact starts it straight away, and heat and pressure make it quicker; a few hours in a dark dress in a warm room is enough to cause a permanent stain. It happens to some degree on every skin tone; on pale dolls, though, it's especially apparent because dark marks are impossible to miss.

If Colour Transfers, Don't Use the Fabric
As for the test itself, it's simple. Cut off a small piece of fabric (an inside seam where nobody will see is ideal) and get it fully wet with clean water. Something white is the target, a cloth, cotton bud or kitchen paper, and you rub the wet fabric against it firmly for about thirty seconds. Should any colour transfer to the white cloth, the fabric will stain your doll and shouldn't go on her. The fabric is safe if the white cloth stays clean, and you can use it without worry.

Moisture Is the Trigger
Water stands in for the moisture that's naturally present on the doll's skin, which activates the dye transfer, and that's why the test uses it. Less dye transfers from dry fabric on dry skin than from wet fabric on damp skin, so a water test gives you a worst-case situation, precisely what you want. Usual use is safe for fabric that passes the water test. There's no way around it: a fabric that fails will stain.

Last Year's Safe Fabric Might Not Be Safe Now
Run the test again for each new piece of clothing, same brand or not. Safe last year doesn't mean safe this year, with manufacturing processes changing and dye batches varying. Skip it and you risk permanent dark marks on her thighs; do it, which takes two minutes, and the doll looks solid for years. Skipping it is inexcusable, and buyers who learn the hard way are the ones who end up acquiring replacement dolls.

What to Be Suspicious Of
Beware dark colours, cheap dyes, and marginally waxy or coated fabrics, the types most likely to fail the test. Those concentrated, oil-soluble dyes are found in black, dark red, dark blue and dark purple, the worst offenders. Large amounts of pigment make bright neon colours hazardous as well. With cheaply dyed fabric more likely to bleed than properly dyed fabric, expensive clothing is frequently the safer bet, even though the difference isn't guaranteed.

Cotton and Linen Hold Dye Better
The safest fabrics are the light-coloured ones, the natural fibres, and anything that's been pre-washed. White, cream, beige, and pale pastels are practically always safe, because there's not enough pigment to cause visible staining. Cotton, linen, other natural fibres: all tend to hold dye more firmly than synthetics, and all are less likely to bleed as a result. Pre-washed, the fabric has already shed most of its excess dye, and that makes transfer onto the doll less likely. Pre-wash any new clothing before it touches the doll if there's any doubt.

Techniques That Don't Always Work
You can try a few things with a fabric that fails the test before giving up on it. Several washes, hot, with a small amount of white vinegar, may set the dye and lessen bleeding. Mordant is the term for what salt does, binding the dye to the fibres, and it's why an overnight saltwater soak can also help. Neither is guaranteed, and some fabrics will bleed whatever you attempt, but for a specific piece of clothing you genuinely want to use, give them a go.

The Safest Option Is Not to Use It
When washing hasn't fixed the failure, the safest option is not to use the fabric. Because a stain on a doll is permanent, and a new doll costs far more than replacing a piece of clothing, it's not worth the gamble.Mitigation strategies are available for anyone who's attached to the fabric and wants to use it regardless. The first approach is lining the clothing's inside with light-coloured fabric to make a barrier between the dark dye and the doll's skin. The other way is to use the clothing for short periods only and take it off right away after use. Neither approach is foolproof, but each minimises the risk.

Why Doll Clothing Costs More but Is More Reliable
Your safest bet when acquiring doll clothing is retailers who grasp dye migration and have tested their fabrics. Doll-specific clothing brands are usually aware of the issue, select their fabrics accordingly, and so charge more for clothing that's also more reliable. High street shops sell generic clothing that's a gamble, and the cheaper the item, the higher the risk. Invariably run the test on generic clothing before it's used.

How Weather Affects Staining
A seasonal factor is also worth knowing about. Heat accelerates the process, so dye migration is worse in warm weather. Passing in winter proves little, since the same fabric might fail in summer, particularly if the doll is stored in a warm room. Test new clothing more fully if you're acquiring it in summer, and consider washing it several times before use. Heat will cause any residual dye to migrate faster, so the same applies if you're storing a doll in a warm room.

Once It's Set, It's There for Good
If it happens, the stain itself is worth understanding. Because the dye spreads through the material rather than sitting on the surface, dye migration stains are generally diffuse rather than sharp. General darkening or discolouration of the area is the look, and a clear outline of the fabric isn't. It gets more plain over time because the stain spreads and deepens, although it's harder to spot initially. A set stain can't be removed. Your options are covering it with clothing, or accepting it as part of the doll's history.

Use a Fresh Section of Cloth Each Time
A great testing method matters as much as the test itself. A slow bleed takes a while to show, and a quick rub can miss it, which is why the thirty seconds matters. Rub firmly, as though you're trying to remove a stain, because that's the pressure the fabric will experience against the doll's skin. Every test gets a clean patch of the white cloth, as a patch already stained by an earlier test gives a false result. One more thing: wet, not dry. Water activates the dye transfer, so that's how the fabric gets tested.

Test the Darkest Section First
Multiple colours in the fabric? Test the darkest section first. The dark sections of a fabric are what will stain the doll, and they might fail even if the light sections pass. Dark parts bleed, which is why fabrics with dark patterns on a light background need particular care; test each colour separately if you're not sure.

It Varies Enormously
What about timing? There's the question of how long a fabric needs to be in contact with the doll before staining occurs. Enormous variation is the honest answer, shaped by the fabric, the temperature and the pressure. Some stain within an hour; others take days or weeks. Treat a failed fabric as one that will stain sooner or later, and keep it off the doll totally. Cumulative and irreversible, the bleed means there's no safe exposure time for a fabric that bleeds.

Permanent Stains Affect Appearance and Value
Used dolls need a check for dye migration before purchase. Look for dark patches on the thighs, back, or buttocks, which are the most usual areas for staining. The stains are permanent and affect the doll's appearance, which is why a doll with evident dye stains is worth less than one without. Price the stains in. Covering them (with clothing or a new body) costs money, so factor that into the price of a used doll with stains, and don't pay full price.

Two Minutes, No Cost, Maximum Protection
The single most essential maintenance habit any doll owner can develop is the wet-white-cloth test. It stops the most typical cause of permanent damage while taking two minutes and costing nothing. Every single new piece of clothing, tested, as routine; don't skip it just because you're in a hurry. You could lose a doll for the sake of the five minutes you save by skipping the test.
